Publisher's Synopsis
The Puritans considered the family as "a little church," and
the father as its
pastor. It was his duty to oversee and
shepherd his flock. In our day, the idea of a family
gathering together for worship is
virtually unkown, save for a few isolated pockets where this
wonderful tradition is being carried on
in spite of the demands of a world that seeks our time,
our attention, and our focus. As
families get busier with sports, school activites, church
activities, and recreation, this book
calls us back to a long-forgotten priority: that of
worshipping God in the home as well as
the church.
J.W. Alexander, the son of A.A. Alexander, was a great
Princeton theologian as well as a pastor for
many years. Already known for his book
Thoughts on Preaching, in this book, he calls us back to
seeing families as little churches, and
shows the necessity and importance of families worshipping
together in their homes. The goal of
this book is to extend the domestic worship of God's people,
and especially to arouse children to
honor the God of their fathers. To achieve this purpose,
Alexander traces family worship from
Eden through the O.T. and N.T. and church history.
