Christ and Culture Revisitedby D. A. Carson Called to live in the world, but not to be of it,
Christians must maintain a balancing act that becomes more
precarious the further our culture departs from its Judeo-
Christian roots. How should members of the church interact
with such a culture, especially as deeply enmeshed as most
of us have become?
D. A. Carson applies his masterful touch to this problem.
He begins by exploring the classic typology of H. Richard
Niebuhr with its five Christ-culture options. Carson
proposes that these disparate options are in reality one
still larger vision. Using the Bible’s own story line and
the categories of biblical theology, he clearly lays out
that unifying vision. Carson acknowledges the helpfulness
of Niebuhr’s grid and similar matrices but warns against
giving them canonical force.
More than just theoretical, "Christ and Culture Revisited"
is also designed ... Read More |
Pierced for Our Transgressions :Rediscovering the Glory of Penal Substitution by Steve Jeffery, Michael Ovey, Andrew Sach The belief that Jesus died for us, suffering the wrath of
his own Father in our place, has been the wellspring of
hope for countless Christians through the ages. However,
with an increasing number of theologians, church leaders,
and even popular Christian books and magazines questioning
this doctrine, which naysayers describe as a form
of "cosmic child abuse," a fresh articulation and
affirmation of penal substitution is needed. And Jeffery,
Ovey, and Sach have responded with clear exposition and
analysis. They make the case not only that the doctrine is
clearly taught in Scripture, but that it has an impeccable
pedigree and a central place in Christian theology, and
that its neglect has serious consequences. The authors
also systematically analyze more than twenty specific
objections that have been brought against penal
substitution and charitably but firmly offer a defining
declaration of the doctrine of the cross for any concerned
reader. ... Read More |

The Enduring Community:Embracing the Priority of the Church by Brian Habig and Les Newsom The Enduring Community: Embracing the Priority of the Church is a clarion call for the evangelical Church to return to Christ's foundational roots for it. Those roots are lodged in the Universal Church's and local church's Christ-imaging roles as a prophetic witness, a priestly witness, and a kingly witness. The authors, both PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) ordained pastors and long-time campus ministers, Brian Habig and Les Newsom, assert that when the Church, and local churches, again major on its primary roles, health will be restored and a shine will go froth that is impossible to ignore.
Nothing is more important to Christ than his Bride, pure and spotless! This book is devoted to that end.
The Authors:
Brian Habig, Vanderbilt University. A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity) and Mississippi State University, Brian Habig has served as an ordained minister of ... Read More |
Martin Bucer:Unsung Hero of the Reformation by Lawrence, David No one worked more arduously and incessantly as did Martin
Bucer, the "other Martin", to preserve the unity of the
fledgling Protestant movement from splintering into rival
sects and denominations. Not only did he work for unity
among Protestants, for many years he held to the hope of
reunification with Rome. So obsessed was he with this task
that one of his closest friends called him "the fanatic for
unity."
Bucer's plan was to call for a definition of the essentials
of the faith on which there could be no yielding or
compromise, and to allow the non-essentials to be matters
of opinion on which people could differ without disrupting
their fellowship. What were the essentials of the faith for
Bucer? One may cite justification by faith alone, the
authority of Scripture, redemption resting in the eternal
counsels and decrees of the sovereign God, the importance
of the Christian community, the ... Read More |
The Decline of African American TheologyFrom Biblical Faith to Cultural Captivity by Thabiti M. Anyabwile About the
Book
Who were Jupiter Hammon, Lemuel Haynes and Daniel Alexander Payne? And what do they have in common with Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Thurman and James Cone? All of these were African American Christian theologians, yet their theologies are, in many ways, worlds apart.
In this book, Thabiti Anyabwile offers a challenging and provocative assessment of the history of African American Christian theology, from its earliest beginnings to the present. He argues trenchantly that the modern fruit of African American theology has fallen far from the tree of its early predecessors. In doing so, Anyabwile closely examines the theological commitments of prominent African American theologians throughout American history. Chapter by chapter, he traces what he sees as the theological decline of African American theology from one generation to the next, concluding with an unflinching examination of several contemporary ... tremendous gift to and resource for all who want an
entryway into the study of the Puritans. They not only
provide accurate biographical and theological introduction
to every Puritan whose works have been reprinted in the
last fifty years, but also combine with their helpful
summaries an insightful analysis. If this were not enough,
they’ve added major appendices that include the so-
called ‘Scottish Puritans’ (that is, the great Scottish
theologians who were contemporaries of and like-minded
brethren in doctrine and piety with the English Puritans)
as well as the Dutch Further Reformation divines. Meet the
Puritans, With a Guide to Modern Reprints is a must have.
I know of nothing like it. If you are looking for a
reliable window into the life, theology, piety and
ministry of the Puritans—this is it.” ... Read More |
